A hero in the making. Nick Giacomini, better known as MC YOGI is bringing together his yoga, his music, and his art to enlighten and spread yoga philosophy around the globe. His journey through a troubled youth lead him to a self-discovery and creativity unlike anyone else. This is his story.
You know, I failed my way through junior high, went to summer school, got suspended, kicked out of three schools, and ended up living in a group home for at-risk youth for about two and a half years. That was all before I found yoga.
There was a few key moments when I was in the group home that started to move me in the direction of my spiritual practices. One of them, was a song by the Beastie Boys called "Bodhisattva Vow" and it was about Buddhists. That was the first time I ever really heard anything about Buddhism, in fact, listening to the Beastie Boys was the first time I ever heard "Namaste." And, fortunately, my dad started practicing yoga. When I started to see the transformation he was going through I got really attracted to the practice. But he said, you probably wouldn't like yoga, it's too hard. He said that like three times and that was enough for me to be like, "No, no I really want to do it." I ended up going to class and that is when my whole life began to change really dramatically.
The making of a superhero is someone who has experienced some sort of trauma or tragedy in their life and through that process they have gained a certain type of skill set.
And then when you turn around and use that skill set to support others, that's what makes you a hero. And so for me I don't feel like I'm a hero personally. I feel like I'm just a regular person. But MC YOGI is sort of a hero, because it's like this other character who's on this mission to kinda you know promote and spread more yoga philosophy and enlightenment essentially. So I look to MC YOGI the character to help you know inspire me to be a better person.
So the three jewels in my life are yoga, music and art. And what came first was art because I was you know scribbling on the walls when I was you know one, two years old. I started writing songs when I was probably about 13, 14 and they're just really bad. They're just really really kind of embarrassing. But it really wasn't
until I started practicing yoga that I really discovered my voice. I felt like my music was coming from a deeper more authentic place. I wasn't trying to be like anybody else. I had sort of found my you know what felt true to me.
It's interesting because those three things yoga, music and art all have one thing in common. It's tactile like when I practice yoga it's like I'm in my body. When I'm drawing I'm like, I'm in my body. When I'm making music, dancing, connecting, creating. So those three things for me like help me to reconnect with my body with the present moment, with my spirit with my core. And it always brings me peace. I always feel better every time without fail. It has never failed me.
You know the world is binary. It's like ones and zeroes, right. And everything that we have is like a zero. Essentially it's empty. But when you put that one in front of all the zeroes all of a sudden you're super, abundant, wealthy. And so the one for me is my yoga practice. So long as I'm connected to my practice it gives value to everything else. You know whether it's just like slowing down pausing, taking a few deep breaths or sitting to meditate chanting mantras or doing the full asana practice. It's where I go to get inspiration. All my music and art flows from my yoga practice and you know I don't think I would be here if it weren't for yoga.
